Action at home and away as the sun finally made a return

It has been a busy weekend for the Harriers, starting on Saturday with a large contingent travelling oop north to Sedgefield for the English National XC championships. An early start meant we could fit a parkrun in first en route (it was Saturday after all) before heading to the main event.
On a classic XC course against hundreds of the finest athletes in the country, Harry Cole, in U17’s and Holly Bulmer in U15’s got us underway with two fine performances over 6km and 4km experiencing their first National XC event.
In the women’s event, with nearly 600 competitors over an 8k course, Hannah Miller led the Harriers home, follow by Darcie Wasnidge, Sarah Worley, Sam Robinson, Cath Mhembre, Nat Cunningham and Sally Bulmer making a 7 strong team, decked out in finest face paint.
In a field of nearly 1400 men and sporting equally impressive face paint, the men took on a 12k course with Tom Shaw leading the Harriers home. Matt Daly and Henry Brady very literally took it right to the line for a competitive finish 1 second apart. Tom Petit, Chris Johnson, Steve Battle, Chris Lawrence (now available for competitions in AI as well as standard) and David Bulmer followed for a brilliant day’s racing. Most importantly, we stopped for pizza on the way home!

Sunday saw the sun finally come out and our juniors had the benefit of beautiful weather at their final Notts mini league XC race of the season.
The racing saw the Worksop Harriers junior squad finish 3rd overall in Notts this season, which is a brilliant result and testament to their dedication this year. And to the efforts of coaches, volunteers and parents to getting them there and organising it all!

For U11 girls, Georgina Walker, Frankie Boden-Hook, Lauren Townrow, Libby Mould and Lydia Spencer were on great form, and Lauren secured 4th place overall this season.
The U11 boys had a great race, and won the 1st place overall team prize for the season. On Sunday, George North, Oakley Allsop, Hugo McCarthy and Freddie North ran and Roman Marks and Freddie Parente also contributed to the team this season. George North took 1st place and 1st overall of the season for a great day for the boys!
Sabrina Cupit-Richards ran her first mini league cross country in U13’s and did a brilliant run finishing in the top half, and in U13 boys Isaac Beresford had a strong race coming 8th with Ethan Baxter in 15th in another great run.
Finally, Holly Bulmer, despite racing the nationals the day before, came 4th in U15 girls for a fantastic end to the day for the squad.
Sunday also saw the Eckington Epic take place, a 7-mile self-guided trail race, where competitors don’t know the route until the start, and GPS devices are not allowed. Kerry Dickinson and Sarah Morgan put on a fine show to finish 23rd out of 57 in a race where navigational skills and pace both matter.

And finally, and furthest from home, a group of Harriers had the benefit of the sun for more than just one day, spending the weekend in Alicante and doing the half marathon. Sam Marriott led the squad home, followed by Jo Campbell with a half marathon PB of 1:47:49, Tamara Hazlehurst and Rachel Silcock. Well done ladies, and we are not jealous- honest!

Before we finish this week, we would like to introduce the new club mascot. after a tough naming competition, he has been named Jeff (because, why not?) and attended his first Nationals event with owner Holly this week. Next week we have yet to decide who has to run the final local XC race whilst wearing Jeff, although so far the name Bryan has been mentioned the most.........
