Indoor success for Juniors, muddy mayhem for seniors!

It’s been another week of action for our junior squad, starting on Wednesday evening, when a big contingent of the multi-event Worksop Harriers travelled to EIS for the Sheffield Run / Jump/ Throw Open Meeting. The young and talented team had a busy, enjoyable evening, taking part in 28 events in total and gaining sixteen new PB's between them, a tremendous team performance.

Summer Johnson showed excellent form ahead of her forthcoming National Pentathlon competition. With PB's in each of her three events, Summer knocked over one second off her 200m time, recording 28.93s, lowering her 60m time to 8.59s and improving her shot to 8.22m. Under 15 boy's qualifier for the National Pentathlon competition in March, Isaac Beresford, achieved two PB's, running 2min 24.73s in 800m and lowering his 60m time to 8.32s. Another Pentathlon hopeful, Darcey Croshaw, improved her long jump PB, leaping to 4.52m then ran a quick 200m in 29.66s. Also in the long jump were Grace Walton gained a PB of 4.46m, Ceryn Greaves jumped 3.55m and newcomer to this group, George North, jumped 3.93m. George then ran a PB 800m time of 2m 41.62s. Three more Harrier girls doubled up in the 60m and 200m. Newcomers to this type of competition Sabrina Cupit and Eliza De Villiers joined Amelia Read, with all three recording a full house of PB's. Grace and Ceryn teamed up with Summer in the shot, Grace putting 9.13m, just one centimetre short of her PB, and Ceryn putting 6.98m. Ceryn then ran 9.01s for a PB in the 60m with Grace going on to record a 400m PB time of 67.09s. A very successful evening was concluded with Dabeer Yousuf running his 800m in 2m 9.76s, just two seconds outside his best time having recorded the quickest Harrier time of 8.08s in the 60m.

On Sunday, there was further indoor success at the Indoor British University College & Sport (BUCS) Athletics Championships in Sheffield, with two promising young multi-event Worksop Harrier athletes representing their Universities.

Alicia Wells represented Oxford University in the 60m hurdles. Although not making the final, Alicia ran 9.49s, within the qualifying time for selection for the indoor EA National Championships. Brooklyn Crooks, selected by Nottingham Trent University to compete in the long jump and high jump, decided to focus purely on high jump. This proved an excellent decision, as Brooklyn leapt to a new PB height of 2.03m and came away with a National Bronze medal. Both athletes are a credit to their respective Universities and can look forward to an exciting University athletics career and a promising forthcoming outdoor season.

Finally, the seniors competed in match 4 of 5 of the local XC league this Sunday at Killamarsh.  It was the muddiest course of the series so far, with ankle deep mud and not everyone managed to stay vertical! Luckily the lake provided an opportunity to wash off afterwards before the usual buffet!

It was a super successful day with the women’s team winning again and securing overall series victory with one race still to go, our home match at Worksop. The men’s team also saw victory this week, with a big turnout for the men’s squad, making it 2-2 in the series for the men with Clowne, for a winner-takes-all finale at Worksop in two weeks!

As ever, we achieve points through the first 7 women and men over the line and bonus points for every runner we field, needing 17 men and 17 women for maximum points. Our first 7 ladies were Hannah Miller, winning overall, Sarah Worley, Darcie Wasnidge, Madi Spencer, Kirsty Fairbairn-Wint, Sam Robinson and Claire Allsop, backed up by 11 squad mates. For the men, Tom Shaw won overall, with Ben Rhodes, Euan Carroll, Saimon Kihwele, Matt Daly, Henry Brady and Nick Moore making 7 backed up by another 13 men.

A big shout out to our supporters at XC, especially the junior section. They provided cheers, high fives and had great fun rolling around in the mud. After a hard race, the parents were delighted to be faced with children that required more hosing down than their trainers.

Brilliant results all round, and for a small club we don’t half pack a mighty punch!

A final request for any of our readers and followers, if you can support us by volunteering at our home XC match on Sunday 1st March for a couple of hours we would be grateful!
