We can only start this week with a massive well done to recent recruit Kirsty Fairbairn-Wint. Kirsty is no stranger to ultra running but this weekend took on her longest, toughest challenge yet; the Winter Spine Challenger South. Over two days and nights, battling extreme cold, Kirsty completed the 113 miles and 19000ft of elevation in some of the toughest conditions imaginable, including rain, strong winds, sleet and battling through feet of snow. It is an epic achievement and one to be very proud of!

Continuing the longer events, Matan Duveen took on the Rasselbock Sherwood Pines 6 hour event on Saturday, achieving his goal of 4 laps and 14.7 miles on a snowy and icy covered course.

Saturday saw us return to Bulwell Hall for the final round of the North Mids XC. A week after the county champs there, the course was both familiar and completely different thanks to a snow covering! Our U11 girls got the racing underway on a 1500m course with Beth Hands making a league debut with a fine run followed by a trio off Libby Mould, Lydia Spencer and Isla Arthur. Next up, our U11 boys went in to the final match en masse, with George North leading the boys home before a sea of green and black followed. Max Foster had a fine debut and Oakley Allsop, Feddie North and Hugo McCarthy all pushed each other to the end, coming in consecutively. A great debut series for our young athletes, with the boys narrowly missing out on the medals in a tight series finish.

In the U15 girls, Holly Bulmer celebrated not just her birthday, but an excellent race, taking her highest position to date in the 3k race, whilst over 4k in U17 women’s, Miley Townrow ran well to make it a afternoon of great runs for the younger women. For the U17 men, Harry Cole did a strong run over 6k, completing the series as he gathers valuable racing experience
Our ladies were up next on the 6k course. Madi Spencer led home our ladies, followed closely by Claire Allsop, Cathy Mhembere and Sally Bulmer. All four completed each race in the series for lots of good XC experience. The men’s 10k course saw the ice sheets now becoming more of an ice-bath after everyone else had cracked them. Tom Shaw led the men’s team home whilst Adam Turner enjoyed a best-performance yet in the series as he continues to improve. Bryan Cherry, Tom Pettit and Adam Jonczyk followed next with three excellent runs, before the ever present Dad trio did their bit with Dave Bulmer, Neil Allsop and Nick Mould coming next then Peter Spencer finishing off the Harriers contingent. An Excellent first season for the Harriers in the series, with four varied courses (and weathers) providing lots of valuable competition for all age groups as well as great afternoons out. Thanks to Holly’s birthday falling today, it meant the series ended with enough birthday cake to feed several running clubs!
And lastly but certainly not least, some incredible results in the Northern Indoor Championships and Loughborough Open Meeting over the weekend, where several of the combined events group competed.
The weekend began with Charlotte Ayton running a time of 8.25s in the U20W 60m heats, then followed with a PB of 8.13s in the semi-final. Unfortunately, Charlotte then suffered an injury, halting what looked like a very promising weekend. We wish Charlotte well in her recovery and hope to see her back for the outdoor season in April.

Summer Johnson and Darcey Croshaw were up next in the U17W 60m hurdles. Summer ran a time of 9.89s to qualify for the semi-finals where she then ran 9.98s. Although not qualifying for the final, Summer is now regularly running under 10 seconds for this event. Darcey ran a time of 10.64s in her heat, just outside her PB. Summer then rounded off day one with a 4.73m long jump, only just short of her recently set PB.
Day two saw Summer and Darcey back in action, joined by Grace Walton and Dabeer Yousuf. Darcey was the first up, running a 200m PB time of 29.3s. All three young women then took part in their respective high jump competitions and came away with two Northern Championship medals. Grace took bronze in the U20W event, clearing 1.40m, whilst Summer leapt into second place with a clearance at 1.55m for a silver medal in the U17W high Jump. Darcey also competed in the U17W narrowly missing her PB height of 1.50m with 1.45m. Grace then ran a 200m in a new PB time of 29.25s and finished off her day with a long jump of 4.21m. To round off a great weekend for our Worksop Harriers squad, Dabeer Yousuf showed a return to form in the 800m with a time of 2m 09.1s just short of his PB.

In the Loughborough indoor open meeting, Layla Gavin ran in the U15G 60m hurdles, just missing out on the qualifying standard for this year's National Indoor Championships. New to this event, it shows Layla’s potential to start competing at the highest level.
Next weekend sees Alicia Wells and Grace Walton taking part in the U20W Pentathlon at the National Indoor Combined Events Championships in Sheffield.
