Storm Bert might have put a stop to most Saturdays events but Indoors at the EIS, five young harriers competed in the Northern Indoor Open Meeting.
In preparation for the National Indoor Pentathlon Championships, Charlotte Ayton and Alicia Wells put in excellent performances in the U20W category. Charlotte gained pb's in the 60m (8.2s) and Shot (7.32m) and then finished with a massive pb in the 150m, of almost one second. with a time of 19.43s. Alicia achieved an indoor shot pb of 8.57m and then ran an excellent 1000m pb in 3m 16.27s, a good preparation for her pentathlon 800m in January.
In the U17W event, Grace Walton ran a 1000m pb in 3:54.75 seconds and narrowly missed her shot pb (by just 0.02 m) with a throw of 9.54m.
In the U15 girls event Summer Johnson also ran a 1000m pb, in 3:50.29s and followed that with a solid shot Put of 7.02m
Both Summer and Grace have their National Pentathlon event in early March, and both are showing good form at this early stage of the indoor season.
Not to be outdone, newcomer to the training group and taking part in his first ever track competition in the U17 men's competition, 15 year old Dabeer Yousuf, ran his 60m in 8.30s before winning his 1000m race in 2:54.29s, taking the lead from the start and remaining at the front throughout the race.
On to Sunday and with the tail end of the storm lingering, conditions became unseasonable warm and interesting if nothing else as the penultimate club GP race and this years Club Half Marathon Championship took place at the Clowne Half Marathon. An hilly and rolling course that heads South out of Clowne, before looping around through Elmton, Creswell and then Climbing back up to and then out of Whitwell, theres no easy way round the challenging course and strong winds, rain and a good few flooded roads made it a race more than a run more than ever. As the race started a pack of 9 runners made their way out in to the headwind, each seeing whose moves would stick and who fell back in to or off the pack and as runners headed left out of the wind and down towards Elmton it was move then would stick as Worksop Tom Shaw became a leading pair before taking the lead from mile 5. Holding the effort, Tom continued to open the gap to lead the field home, taking the coveted 1st Male Hoodie in 1:16:27 and the first of two Harriers on the podium also securing the Harriers Half Marathon Trophy for another year. Closely following Tom saw Matt Daly pacing superbly to come from down the field to move through the initial leading pack, finishing a superb 4th with a 2 minute PB in 1:19:50. Adam Jonczyk was 3rd Harrier in 1:37:35 (With the team narrowly missing out on the mens team prize), followed by an excellent run by Steve Batte with his first half in 3 years in 1:42:00. Chris Lawrence was next (1:42:45 and a course PB), followed by David Firth (1:46:22), Peter Spencer (1:54:48) and then Danny Watts knocking nearly 5 minutes off his recent Worksop Half time in 1:55:38, with James Morgan being a late entrant to round out the men in 2:00:55
The Harriers didn’t have long to wait from the 1st finish for a 2nd podium as Hannah Miller continued with an excellent year of running as it was another PB as she finished 2nd lady and a superb 25th overall in 1:28:53 and a PB of nearly 2 minutes on a challenging course. Madi Spencer and Julie Holloway followed shortly and another excellent run from improving Julie with a PB in 1:51:57. Natalie Cunningham snuck under 2 in 1:59:04 with Rachel Silcock just behind in 2:00:23. Nia Arthur was back on a personal favourite course in 2:06:21, followed by Sharon James (2:11:19), Karen Parry (2:16:21), Gemma (2:18:07), Tracey Reeves (2:20:25), Lee-Anne Manley (2:21:03) with Michelle Atherton in 2:29:09 for a great morning of Harrier performances!
Heading North and the popular Doncaster 10k was starting out from the race course and with its reputation for producing fast times it didn’t disappoint. Heading in to the town centre for a quick loop before back out, past the race course to the turn around before a final couple km dash back to finish on race course Road. Paul Marriott led the Harriers back showing a great return to form bagging both a PB and club gold standard in 36:08. Deep in the training cycle, Adrian Hopkinson followed shortly running a very respectable 36:46 again followed shortly by Paul Parry in 38:06 finishing 5th in Age category and another Gold Standard time. Our ladies were equally well represented with Sam Marriott dipping under 50 in 49:55, Cathy Mhembere ran 52:57 whilst Charlotte Randell had a battle to the finish in 54:07. Finishing off this weeks report is a great Run as Karen Lloyd continuing to show great form as she ran 54:17 and bag a third club standard for the Harriers at Donny!
