Cross Country Season stepped up this weekend as the Harriers returned to the North Mids XC League this year with a very sunny (and rather dry!) first match at Markeaton Park, Derby. With over 700 runners and races for everyone to 8 to 80+, the league provides a great opportunity for club racing. With races varying from a single small lap up to three large laps (each lap featuring one or two climbs and descents) and all on grass the courses provide something for everyone as well as plenty of opportunities to spectate as we cheer our fellow green and black on!
Kicking off the season our U11 girls raced over a single lap of approx 1 mile as Lauren Townrow, Libby Mould and Isla Arthur brought in our first team of the day. Not long after and a great little unit of our U11 boys made a superb start the season, led home by George North, followed by a duo of Hugo McCarthy & Freddie Parente, Oakley Allsop and Freddie North saw three of our boys in the top-15 and a brilliant start as the team currently sits in the medal positions overall.
Up two age groups and the distance ramps up as Holly Bulmer ran a superb race in U15 girls with 1x small + 1x medium laps for over 2 miles of XC
Further ramping up the distance and Harry Cole picked up more valuable XC experience in the U17’s men’s race over a challenging 3x medium laps course for nearly 4 miles.
This course would feature again as the ladies raced got underway with another great team as Madi Spencer led our Harriers ladies home followed by a busy weekend for Sam Robinson, Claire Allsop, Nat Cunningham and Sally Bulmer to cap a great day for our women.
As always with XC, the men finish up the day with 3x large laps off the park, covering a little over 5 miles of what was still a fast course owing to the days conditions. Tom Shaw led the team home, with a very welcome returning duo of Dom Fielding and Adam Turner to the XC team, followed by Bryan Cherry, Adam Jonczyk, Nick Mould and the final Allsop of the Day with Neil illustrating what a great day these are for Harriers families to get something for everyone!
The next match sees the Harriers head to Wickstead Park on November 8th as we’ll continue our campaign for great team days out, individual and team medals!
Back on the roads and it was a quieter one this week but a busy one for one Harrier as Sam Robinson made it a double weekend of racing as she was back in Derby for the Dhelton Striders 10k. On out-and-back course along the Derby Canal and Infinity Park Way, Sam not only bagged a big PB of over 5 minutes, covering the 10k course in 45:02, but also her first club Silver Standard to cap off a successful weekend.
Matching the standards and Tamara Hazlehurst showed a fine return to form at the challenging Hedgehog Half, setting off from Normanby Hall. Tamara scored double with a Silver Standard and PB of 1:46:47
