Some brilliant variety this week as Harriers took were competing across all surfaces and distances as our youngest got us underway at the Juniors Inter-counties T&F representing Nottinghamshire at the Costello Stadium, Hull. Six Harriers pulled on a Nottinghamshire vest as George North took Gold (U12 Hurdles). Up to U14’s and Eliza De Villars (HJ and LJ) whilst for the boys Isaac Beresford took gold (LJ) before joining Club mate Ethan Baxter who placed the team 2nd in the relay. Finally, at U16 Summer Johnson and Darcey Croshaw covered HJ, LJ, Hurdles and Shot between them including a silver for Summer in HJ.
Still at the T&F but on the side line Mark Hazlehurst volunteered in a packed weekend of athletics action as the Ultimate Championship kicked off in Budapest
Getting slightly longer and a pair of 10k’s saw Saimon Kihwele take on the undulating Mansfield 10k running 36:20 as training continues to go well off the back of a strong Summer League Series!
Speaking of hilly 10k’s and a trio of Harriers headed just south of the peak district for a mixed all-terrain race at Alton topping 500ft of climbing with most of it coming in a single hill for a great afternoon out for Nick Mould, Mike Hands and Mark Townrow
Finishing up on the roads and it was hard to miss one of the years biggest races as the Great North Run once again took place with its famous course from Newcastle to South Shields with Neil Allsop, Will Birkbeck (Guide Dogs UK) and Jess Monk (Prostate Cancer UK) ran excellently.
Heading off road and the popular Monday night ritual of Trunce had its 8th and final edition of the year which means race vests are left in the drawer and its fancy dress finale as Oakley Allsop, Holly Bulmer and Teddy Spencer all ran the Junior race whilst it was (nearly) a parents race as Neil Allsop, Madi Spencer, Chris Lawrence and Sharon James all took on the classic route!
This weeks major miles however all came from a select few as the Robin Hood 100 took place starting over in Wheatley before making its way down the Canal, two laps of Clumber, Sherwood Forest and Cresswell Crags before back up the canal. A popular ultra for our Harriers with its local trails but several debuts this year as had some fantastic results with Matt Daly first Harrier back in around 17:32 followed by a huge PB of several hours for Henry Brady in 19:28. Another debut for Nick Moore saw his first 100 miler (on foot!) in under 21 hours whilst another repeat offender and brave performance saw Chris Johnson make it round in a little under 25 hours. It wasn’t just the boys knocking out all the miles either as Charlotte Randell was another 100 mile debut with a fantastic one at that in around 25 hours.
A brilliant weekend of miles with not only the runners working hard but a fantastic show of club support with many of our Harriers making their way around the course helping keep the runners, fuelled, motivated moving and pacing to keep them on track!
In most weeks it would be 100 miles would put you top by a long way for most miles but alongside our locals Steve Battle headed over to Balatonfured, Hungary to link up with the British Team for the 6-Day World Championship. 6 days to complete as many miles as possible on a trail just under 1 km, the hot weather continued over in Europe making for a challenging week, Steve covered an incredible 507.5km/315.4 miles to finish 64th helping GB to a 18th finish position from 38
