Friday night saw the first county champs of the weekend as Newstead Abbey hosted the Dash and the Notts 5k champs with a great turn out for the green and black. A fast downhill 1st km gives way to an undulating out an back and runners head past the Abbey and there were fast times aplenty with PB’s but leading the charge for the Harriers saw two county medals as Barnaby Gray took 1st V55 and Gold for the men in 17:51 whilst Hannah Miller finished 3rd lady overall to take county bronze and a PB in 18:27. It wasn’t just medals to celebrate either as a string of 5k PB’s followed with Madi Spencer (20:58), Lucy Binch (21:17), Peter Spencer (21:58), Sam Robinson (22:30) and Mark Townrow (25:23) made it an excellent night.

Barely half a day later and the next county champs was underway as the Heckington County Show also hosted its annual 10 miler which also includes several junior races for an action packed Saturday. Startin on the grass track (which features later) the 10 mile race starts with a single loop before out on to the county roads for a two loop course through and around Heckinton. Bryan Cherry was first Harriers home and 2nd V45 as he ran 1:07:09 whilst two of three Bulmer’s also joined in as David and Sally also took on the 10 miler running 1:20:04 and 1:37:44 . With the senior races out of the way, a series of Junior races took place on the grass 300m grass track and Bulmer #3 was in action as Holly Bulmer made it a productive morning with 1st U15 girl in the 1,500m and a cash prize to boost!
Still on Saturday and very much out in the county and Gemma Hind undertook one of her biggest challenges to date at the Lakeland 50. A mammoth endurance event as runners navigate 50+ Miles on the fells of the lake district starting in Dalemain before working south via Gatescarth, Garburn and on to Ambleside before finishing up Jacobs Ladder at Tibberwaite on the way back to Coniston, covering 10,000 ft of climbing on route. Finishing in 18 hours 33 minutes and just with daylight breaking the event is the culmination of a dedicated period of training from Gemma and a fantastic end and reward!
Off the fells on Saturday and on to the track as the final mini-league took place at Mansfield for our young Harriers and a fantastic set of results both individual and for the team. Kick starting our team success saw our U11 Boys team of Oakley Allsop, George North, James Lanes, Archie Sission and Hogo McCarty and Freddie Parente take individual wins in the 80m, 150m and 600m and Long Jump before a joint effort to win the 4x100m relay saw the team win not only the event and tearm performance of the day but also crown Worksop U11B the winners for the 2025 Mini League season. On to the U11 girls and a busy day for Lauren Townrow saw her compete in the 80m, 600m 150m and Howler Javelin and Isla Arthur also made her club debut in the 80m, 150m and Howler Javelin.
Up and age group and Eliza Villiers (70mH, 3rd in HJ and LJ), Sabrina Cupit-Richards (100 and 200m) and Aya St Juste (200m, 800m and LJ) competed for our U13G whilst for our boys it was a busy day for Isaac Beresford as he won the 100m, 3rd in 800m in a close fought race and HJ to finish.
Up to the U15’s and day winning performance as Summer Johnson was awarded field female athlete of the match for her 1.50m HJ as well as 2nd in 75mH. Joining Summer, Darcey Croshaw raced 200m, 75mH and LJ, whilst Emilia Jonczyk competed in 100, 200m and LJ. Heidi Marks finished off the team competing across 800m and Javelin before all four girls teamed up for a competitive 4x100m relay. Finishing off the team for the day and Henry Marks competed in Javelin.
In the final age group of the day Penny North represented the green and black in the U9 50m whilst in the U9B 50m Freddie North took 3rd place followed by Bobby Sisson.
That wasn’t it for a busy weekend of T&F though as spanning both days On the weekend of 25/26th July the England Athletics Senior and Under 20 Track and Field Championships were held at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham. Entry requires meeting the qualifying standard to take part, and Worksop Harriers had two representatives. Brooklyn Crooks finished 5th in the U20 Men's high jump clearing 1.89m and Charlotte Ayton ran 15.64s in the U20 Women's 100m hurdles to finish 14th overall. Although both of these multi-event athletes were slightly outside of their pb performances they have each gained more valuable experience in competing at this high standard of competition.
Brooklyn will go on to compete at the British Championships in a few weeks and Charlotte will be joined by several other Worksop Harriers when she competes for Nottinghamshire Schools in the National multi-events championships at Cheltenham in September.
Finishing off a very busy weekend for five of the Friday night 5k’ers and it was an early-morning dash up North (complete with a bit of parkrun tourism en-route) up to Northumberland for the Coastal Half Marathon. Bussed out to Bedale from Amble and starting on the beach, runners follow the coastal path south across, sand, rocky trails and road as they pass Dunstanburgh castle and on the way to finish back on the beach at Alnmouth. A crown worthy weekend for Hannah Miller as following on from her Friday night success, she raced well to take the lead on the final beach stretch to drop the competition and take the win on a challenging course running 1:31:35 and add a Worksop Harrier to the Coastal Half cup. On the Men’s side and Tom Shaw knocked 3 minutes off last years time to finish 3rd in 1:20:30 whilst next up two Harriers looking a little worse for wear pre-race still saw excellent results as Matt Daly finished 7th in 1:28:51 whilst Henry Brady finished 21st (1:35:22) with Kerry Saville joining the Harriers squad running 1:48:29. Rounding out the squad and having enjoyed the Harriers social Saturday night Chris Lawrence refused to make it a DNF (having looked doubtful on the start line!) as he enjoyed the scenery, course and couple local establishments on route finishing 2:14:08.
