English Schools Championships - Alexander Stadium
On Friday and Saturday 11th/12th July, the 100th Anniversary addition of the English Schools Track and Field Championships took place at the Alexander Stadium at Perry Barr in Birmingham. This very prestigious event has often been referred to as 'the kids Olympics' due to the high qualifying standards only allowing the very best junior, intermediate and senior English school athletes to compete. This year we had two Worksop Harriers competing for Nottinghamshire Schools, both in the senior girls 100m hurdles and both from Outwood Valley Post 16 Centre. Charlotte Ayton ran 15.81s and Alicia Wells clocked 15.88s with both of them very close to their pb's. The experience gained from such an event, in such an atmosphere and environment, will stand them both in good stead for future top-level competitions.
Northern League - match 3 - Cudworth
On Sunday 13th July we had a very small team compete in the Northern League at Cudworth. Although we were low in numbers the quality of the performances ensured that we did not finish last. Fresh from the English Schools our two Heptathletes, Alicia and Charlotte, put in an excellent shift, covering NINE events between them, achieving seven 1st places and two 3rd places. They were backed up by Dabeer Yousef (800m and 200m) and Tom Shaw and Ian Monaghan (both ran in the 5000m).

On to Sunday and a hardy crew of Harrier Fell runners took part in the inaugural Eight Stations Ultra (organised by Charm Bracelet trail Events) on an unforgettable day out on a partially self-navigated route across the North Yorkshire Moors National Park from Whitby to Pickering. As the name suggests, the route passed close to or through the eight stations on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. At just over 30 miles, with over 3250 feet of elevation, it was a real slog in the heat! After leaving the Cinder Track in Whitby, runners crossed undulating fields, lanes and woodland, before eventually arriving in Goathland and crossing the open moors to the highest point on the route and on towards the spectacular views of the well known Hole of Horcum.
The next section involved some tricky and steep terrain on little used and overgrown paths with bracken and long grass, before finally arriving at the fourth and last check point before following the railway line for the last few miles back to Pickering and the very welcome finish line.
Jim Stavele finished in 7:34 (despite a navigation error resulting in a couple of extra miles), Kerry Dickinson in 8:51 and Sally Staveley in 10:01.
Sticking with the off road theme and Friday night hosted the Walkington 10k over in Humberside. Boosted by some family success from Holly Bulmer in her school sports day earlier (breaking the Y9G 800m record), Dave and Sally Bulmer took on the undulating out, loop and back course on a mixture of terrain and were rewarded with ice cream and one of the most unique post-race t-shirts around for good work on a very hot evening.
Slighty further but nearer to home, the Rasselbock Full and Half marathon took place at Sherwood Pines with one of two undulating laps which thankfully offered plenty of shade but still continued hot conditions. In the half, Claire Allsop dipped under 2 on her first Half Marathon in 1:59:26 whilst up a distance in the marathon Adam Turner finished in 3:37:26 and Neil Allsop finished in 4:25:40.
Finishing off this weeks run and Lucy Binch continued a fine run of form just up the road with a very strong 10k at the rolling and hot roads of Normanby Hall as she finished 9th Lady and 1st in AG in 44:31.
This week see’s Worksop host our home match of The Notts Summer League at Worksop College so expect to see plenty of Green and Black out and about Wednesday night and fast run report to follow!
